Union Station Revitalization

In 2011, Union Station, a National Historic Site of Canada and the country’s busiest transportation hub serving over 250,000 passengers per day, underwent a major $640-million expansion and renovation project. One of the most prominent components of this project was the replacement of the central section of the train shed with a 50,000 square ft. glass atrium 13 metres above the tracks while ensuring the preservation of the early 20th-century Beaux-Arts style network of steel arches. The glass ‘jewel-box’ design provides ample light at track level while the elegant curtains of clear glass louvers help to repel rain and snow while naturally ventilating the space below.
